His love of music became apparent at a very young age after joining a school singing group in which he got to know and love alpine folklore. Takeo was so excited about yodeling, he practiced diligently at his home in Tokyo and soon appeared on Japanese television as a yodeler and alphorn player. During a stay in Germany to better his German language skills, Takeo was discovered in a local beer garden by the owner who hired him on the spot to perform for the next three months. His career as a Japanese yodeler took off and was unstoppable! His unique musical ability and infectious personality made him a welcome regular guest on the TV screen in no time!

With his hits “New Bibi-Hendl” and “Chicken Attack”, Takeo has now become a celebrated YouTube star. Tens of millions of views around the world testify to his popularity among young and old. The German-American Steuben Parade Committee is thrilled to welcome Takeo Ischi to the 2019 Parade Gala celebrating the 62nd German-American Steuben Parade.

On April 27, 2012, Max Bratwurst und Bier opened their doors as an authentic German restaurant in Astoria, Queens. We’ve been talking to owner Renny Fusha to learn more. The open floor plan of their restaurant allows for a very relaxed and social gathering spot. During the warm, breezy months, the doors and windows are left open to give diners the sense that they are eating al fresco. Delicious menu items include the classics of schnitzel, wursts, and Vorspeisen, your favorite German beers, and even Spezi! If you’re feeling adventurous, they even offer rattlesnake and alligator bratwursts to try!

The team at Max Bratwurst und Bier is very excited to be a part of the Steuben Parade for the first time this year. After being approached in the early summer, Renny was eager to get on board! You can find Max Bratwurst und Bier as one of our new Chef Stations at the Parade Gala and Silent Auction this year on Friday, September 20th. Their station will include tastings of Bratwurst, Potato Salad, Cucumber Salad, Sauerkraut, Sweet Peppers, and Carmelized Onions. Doesn’t that all sound delicious? Run, don’t walk, to buy your Gala & Silent Auction Ticket today to get a taste!

From September 21st to October 6th, Oktoberfest celebrations will be held at the restaurant with stein holding competitions. Max Bratwurst und Bier is located at 47-02 30th Avenue in Astoria, Queens.

New Sponsor Alert! I’d like to introduce Sam Agyemang (general manager) of Lamy, a family owned business best known for writing utensils, specifically the timeless fountain pen.

First conceived in Heidelberg, Germany during in the 1930’s; its philosophy was rooted in the sensible and simple, Bauhaus movement. A movement characterized by craftsmanship and fine art holding equal importance. Architecture, art, woodworking and geometric design could all blend and thirty some odd years later, “Lamy” became official. More than 100 awards (since 1966) have been won between 200 writing instrument models and 26 product series! It has a truly global reach as it is on every continent. Lamy has had a presence in the United States since the introduction of the Safari fountain pen back in 1980.

Our own Vice Chairlady Nicole Miskiewicz (long-time user of Lamy pens) reached out directly to Sam to begin a relationship, given that this brand is both designed and made in Germany, it was a natural fit! Its North American Flagship store is located in New York at 452 W Broadway, in the heart of downtown Manhattan’s shopping destination SoHo. When describing the goals of the Steuben Parade and its rich history, Mr. Agyemang was, “genuinely impressed that in the very busy lives of New York professionals so many great people who make up your organization are there as volunteers”. A great compliment to all that work at making this happen and support it throughout the year.

The passion for fountain pens is on the rise and Mr. Agyemang is there to be a part of it all. Lamy is the first choice for many beginners looking to experience fountain pens for the first time. They are fun, accessible and can actually improve your handwriting. They are great tools for people of all ages and a lot of younger people are rediscovering the art of writing. You will be able to find LAMY at our Silent Auction on Friday, September 20th. Look out mom and dad!

The German-American Steuben Parade Committee of NY is proud to announce that Mrs. Emily Margarethe Haber, German Ambassador to the United States, has been named Grand Marshal of the 62nd Annual German-American Steuben Parade! Immediately prior to being named German Ambassador to the US in June of 2018, Haber, a career foreign service officer, was deployed to the Federal Ministry of the Interior, serving as State Secretary overseeing security and migration at the height of the refugee crisis in Europe. In this capacity, she worked closely with the US administration on topics ranging from the fight against international terrorism to global cyberattacks and cybersecurity. In 2009, she was appointed Political Director and, in 2011, State Secretary at the Foreign Office, the first woman to hold either post. Earlier in her career, she served at the German Embassy in Ankara; in Berlin, she has served as Deputy Head of the Cabinet and Parliamentary Liaison Division, as Director of the OSCE Division, and as Deputy Director-General for the Western Balkans. Emily Haber has extensive knowledge of the Soviet Union and Russia, having worked both in the Soviet Union Division at the German Foreign Office and, on various occasions, at the German Embassy in Moscow, where she served as Head of the Economic Affairs Section and Head of the Political Affairs Department. Emily Haber attended schools in New Delhi, Bonn, Paris, Brussels, Washington, and Athens. From 1975 to 1980, she studied history and ethnology in Cologne, earning her PhD with a dissertation on German foreign policy during the Morocco crisis on the eve of World War I. Emily Haber is married to Hansjörg Haber. The couple has two sons.

The German-American Steuben Parade is held every year on the third Saturday of September. This year, the Parade will be held on Saturday, September 21st, 2019 on Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue, from 68th to 86th Streets. The Parade honors the many contributions of America’s largest ethnic group: German-Americans.

Comments from previous Grand Marshals:

Contessa Brewer, CNBC Correspondent – “Participating in the German-American Steuben Parade as a Grand Marshal has been one of the highlights of my time in New York. It was such an honor and a pleasure to join in the celebration of all the ways German immigrants have contributed to the success of the United States and all the ways we enjoy the influence of German culture.”

John Muller, Emmy Award-winning journalist and anchor of PIX11 News – “What an honor! My great grandfather must have been smiling from above. He left Germany as a tailor for the Prussian Army, before that he was a simple shepherd. Here I am…Grand Marshal! Marching up Fifth Avenue!

Dr. Ruth Westheimer, Journalist, Television Personality and Talk Show Host – “Congratulations to a wonderful organization I have been very pleased to be associated with. Alles Gute!”

Elke Marks (Miss German-America 1994) is celebrating her 25th anniversary as Queen of the German-American Steuben Parade this year!

Klaus Wedemeier (Lord Mayor of Bremen, President of Bundesrat) and Ute Lally, (NY Supreme Court Justice) were the Grand Marshalls of the 1994 parade season. She originally applied for a court position because of her father’s active membership with the NYPD Steuben Association. She was initially so shocked when she won; someone had to tell her to stand up when her name was called as winner. Being a part of the court prompted her to explore her heritage and now makes sure to keep up German language skills and study of German culture. She continues to make Advent wreaths and cook traditional German dishes, especially around Christmas.

Elke’s mother is originally from the former East Germany and she moved to the west two weeks before the Wall was erected. Elke was Miss German-America five years after the fall of the Berlin Wall. She took her trip to Germany the following year, and it was the first time her Aunt Reni could traveled across the border with family into the west. It was incredibly emotional to have been able to take the trip after the wall was down with my family united. Fantastic!

Elke traveled through Germany meeting everyone from dignitaries like Manfred Rommel, son of Erwin Rommel a.k.a ‘The Desert Fox’ to everyday people. She was also honored to speak at Police Plaza and met some incredible people in the New York area. Elke continues to travel and has already made it to 38/50 states as well as some marvelous countries such as Morocco, Cambodia, Jordan, Israel, Costa Rica, Barbados and others.

Elke encourages future court members to, “Get out there and talk to as many people you can. And when you give speeches, don’t be afraid to be passionate and speak from the heart. People relate to you that way and want to be a part of the parade.”

Currently still in the tri-state area, Elke attends the parade and makes sure to tell everyone to come to Oktoberfest. “I will forever be grateful to the committee for the tremendous opportunity”. Thank you, Elke!

Written by: Pavlina Schriel, Miss German-America 2019

This past March I had the life changing opportunity to travel to Köln for Karneval. Although my time in Germany was short, it was full of activity. On my first full day, I was invited to join the Mayor’s float in a parade in Hürth. It was with Burgermeister Dirk Breuer that I was introduced to the ways of the Karneval celebrations. Each float is packed with sweets, snacks, Strüssjer (flowers), and small toys. As we moved along the streets we tossed whatever we could get our hands on into the crowds. From babies to senior citizens, everyone participates and collects goodies by shouting “Kamelle!”

On Sunday I participated in another special parade. During the New York Steuben Parade in September, I met various groups from overseas. I kept running into one group in particular, the Bergheimer Torwache. I befriended their Prinz, Peter Orlowski. When I knew I was going to Köln, I reached out to Peter in hopes of being able to meet up with his group again. To my surprise the answer was not only yes but the group invited me to join their float for their parade in Bergheim! When I got to Bergheim, I met Americans from the German American Mardi Gras Association. We were informed that we would be the first ever Americans to participate in the Bergheim parade, what an honor! The Bergheimer Torwache showed me immense hospitality and I can’t thank them enough.

Rosenmontag concluded my final full day in Köln. That morning I went to the Rathaus of Köln for the Mayor’s breakfast reception. The reception had various performing groups gearing us up with the Karneval spirit. After the reception we made our way to the designated seating area of Buergergarde “Blau-Gold”, the group that generously sponsored me that day. The parade lasted four hours! Four hours of candy catching and dodging! There are thousands of marchers, dozens of floats, creative costumes and fun music. The spirit of Karneval inspired me; it is a way of life. During Karneval everyone participates and celebrates and cherishes one another.
