The German-American Steuben Parade Committee of Greater NY is proud to announce the selection of Miss German-America 2019 & Her Court!  Sophia Huber, a 23-year-old resident of Great Neck, NY, was crowned Miss German-America 2019. Miss Huber graduated from Adelphi University with a BBA in Accounting in 2017 and an MBA in 2018.  On September 21st, 2019, she will ride the German-American Steuben Parade’s “Queen’s Float” on Fifth Avenue along with Princesses Melissa Gecsedi of Glen Cove, NY and Emily Beiser of New York, NY.  Miss Gecsedi is completing her Junior year at Molloy College, with a major in Psychology and a minor in Sociology, Class of 2020. Miss Beiser is a BA Dual Major in Political Science and Statistics at the Sciences Po Paris and Columbia University, Class of 2020. All three talented and accomplished young ladies are extraordinary representatives of the rich German-American heritage and culture of the Metro NY area.

The crowning took place during a MaiFest event held at The Liederkranz on 87th Street in Manhattan on May 19th, 2019.  Each contestant was initially interviewed by a panel of 5 judges.  The assembled guests then listened to each candidate during a live interview session focused on German identity. In addition to the judges’ vote, each audience member had an opportunity to cast a vote determining the Queen and her Princesses! Miss German-America 2019 receives a $5,000 scholarship, her princesses each receive a $2,500 scholarship.  

In addition to crowning Miss German-America 2019, a Junior General and 4 Junior Princesses were introduced.  Edward Castle of New York, NY is Junior General von Steuben.  The Junior Princesses are: Shaelynne Morrison of Northport, NY, Shannon Morrison of Northport, NY, Lilly Muldrew of Larchmont, NY and Jamie D Wilson of Miller Place, NY.

Over 130 guests were in attendance, including the Parade’s General Chairman Robert Radske, numerous Committee members, and various Club Presidents and Representatives from throughout the German-American community in the tri-state area.         

Newly crowned Miss German-America 2019 Sophia Huber remarked “Being chosen as Miss German-America 2019 is such an honor and a title I will wear proudly. I have always been proud of my German, Bavarian, and Gottscheer background and am looking forward to representing the community in a new way!”

Departing 2018 Queen Pavlina Schriel commented “It has been a tremendous honor serving as the 61st Queen of the Steuben Parade. I have loved getting to meet people from across the tri-state area and further exploring my German heritage. I also had the opportunity to travel to Köln where I experienced strong tradition and incredible hospitality. I am so grateful and can truly say my year as Queen has changed my life forever and for the better.”
